FAT STOCK SHOW FOR ASHBURTON

- More Entries This Year A total of 272 entries, compared with 258 last year, have been received for . the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s fourth annual fat stock show, to be held on July 11, according to the secretary (Mt J; P. McDonnell). . < ’ ’ Entries in the sheep section of the .show are slightly down on last year. More than 170 entries have been received, compared with 186 last year. In the cattle section, 84 entries have been received, compared with 61 in 1959. Seventeen entries have been received in the pig section compared with 11 at the last stock show.

Four Challenge trophies will be at Stake. A trophy donated by the Ashburton Master Butchers’ Association will be awarded to the best pen in the class for Corriedale or halfbred wethers, one shear, not exceeding 1301 b live weight, or in the class for Romney or Romney cross wethers, one shear, not exceeding 1301 b live weight. The exhibitor gaining the most points in the show will be awarded a challenge trophy given by the Mid-Cantetbury Stock and Station Agents’ Association. Another trophy, given by Mrs F. R. Hood, is for the class for lambs by a Corriedale or halfbred ram.

The owner of the best exhibit in the cattle classes for a steer up to two years of age and born since July 1, 1958, or a steer aged two or more and born before July. 1, 1958, will be awarded a challenge trophy given by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. There are 19 classes in the show—lo in the sheep section, five in the cattle section and four in the, pig section. Sheep entries will be in pens of three while cattle and pig entries will be in pens of one, said Mr McDonnell. All stock will be to natural condition and must have been owned by the exhibitor for the three months prior to the show. Five points will be awarded for first place, three for second place and two for third place, together with prize money. A weight allowance will be permitted for wet sheep at the'discretion of the show committee.
