Europeans Flee LEOPOLDVILLE, July-6. A mutiny has broken out in the Congo’s Public Security Force (Force Publique) stationed in and around Leopoldville, the capital, the Belgian News Agency reported today. The garrison at Thysville, near Leopoldville, was reported to have refused all orders from the Government There has been no radio contact with the garrison since early this morning. Soldiers in Camp Leopold, on the outskirts of the capital, marched on the Government buildings today. They were unarmed and carried their webbing belts in their hands. The agency said the soldiers from the Thysville garrison were stopping cars. Europeans living in the vicinity were fleeing to Leopoldville. The cause of the mutiny was said to be discontent at the slowness of “Africanisation” in the Belgian-officered Force Publique. Many Africans wanted to be made officers to replace the Belgians.
