Colonel Murphy Holds To Resignation (New Zealand Press Association; AUCKLAND, July 1. Colonel W. Murphy has refused to withdraw or defer his resignation as director of the Auckland civil defence and disaster organisation because "the Government would take that as a victory." He said awareness of the need for an adequate civil defence system would gather momentum. “More will be heard of this,” he addedThe organisation carried unanimously a motion urging Colonel Murphy to withdraw his resignation- or defer it for six months. When he declined, the meeting decided to inform the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Anderton) of its concern at the loss of Colonel Murphy and to inform the Minister of the reasons tor his resignation. It also decided to call applications for a new director. Colonel Murphy said in bis letter of resignation that there had been nothing but “Government procrastination and financial side-stepping” on civil defence. He alleged today that the Government “wrote in civil defence as a sop to the public" when it abolished compulsory military training.
