Denial That U.S. Interested
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 30. The State Department said today that the United States “has not been and is not Interested in securing a base in Hollandia or any place else in New Guinea.” This, statement was issued in response to questions about remarks made at a press conference in. The Hague last Tuesday by the United States Chief of Naval Operations (Admiral Arieigh Burke). Admiral Burke was asked if the United States was interested in having a base in Hollandia. Dutch New Guinea. He replied: “Sure; any base, any place in the world.”
The State Department spokesman, Mr ancoln White, told a press conference: “Although the context of the alleged remark is not clear, I can categorically assure you that' the United States 'has not been and is not interested in securing a base in Hollandia or any place else in New; Guinea.” Mr White said that he did not know if the State Department had sent this assurance direct to the Indonesian Government '
