WASHDYKE TRIALS

Rhythm Rein Shapes Well “The Press** Special Service TIMARU, Juno 30. Rhythm Rein and Lightning Boy worked keenly over a mile and Marsana returned the fastest time for a. half-mile at Washdyke this morning when final trials for the opening day of the South Canterbury meeting were held. All the gallops took place about 20 feet out from the rails on the course proper. The track was in good order. Rhythm Rein (C. L. Hemmingsen) and Lightning Boy (R. Broomnail), which are rival candidates for the Donald Grant Memorial, both had plenty in reserve at the end of a mile in lmin 46 2-ssec, the last half in 52 4-ssec. It is evident that Rhythm Rein is going to be a hard horse to beat with only 7-7 on Saturday. Red Mane (G. R. Hampton) and Wick Light (N. R. Patterson) were of little use to Vamoose (L. M Casey) over a mile. Wick Light was beaten off at the finish and Vamoose could have easily widened his two lengths lead over Red Mane. Vamoose recorded lmin 50 2-ssec. the last half in 56sec. Vamoose, which will cross over to Wellington on Monday night providing he comes through his Washdyke race satisfactorily, is one- of four horses brought North by the Gore trainer E. A. Winsloe. The others are Needles, Sunair and the promising two-year-old Bellarook Showed Dash Le Cheval (C. S. Jones) reeled oft half a mile in 51sec, the last three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. He won at this meeting a year ago and went creditably for fourth last week. High Castle (R. Broomhall) and Needles (L. M. Casey) ran half a mile on terms in 54sec, the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Needles is one of the Winchester Handicap favourites. The hurdler Savoury (C. L. Hemmingsen) completed his work by running half a mile in 55sec. Ada’s Luck (R. Broomhall) just shaded No Pretender (J. Jones) ending .half a mile in 51 2-ssec, the opening furlong in 13 l-ssec. Golden Demonic (B. T. Jones) and Interlaken (C. S. Jones) required 54sec. the last three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. Van Da Hum (D. N. Hadfield). Obeyance (J. Jones), Baby Toes (N. R. Patterson) and Grey valley (B. T. Jones) finished in that order over a mile in lmin 49 2-ssec, the last half in 54 2-ssec. Van Da Hum is a very fit steeples candidate. Marsana (D. N. Hadfield)' sped over half a mile, in 50sec, the last three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. His track work has Jt>een good but his race form disappointing. Baywyn (D. N. Hadfield) beat John Mac (J. N. Cappie) and Ejay (R. Broomhall) over half a mile in 51sec, the last - three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Ejay. a. form runner for the Caroline Handicap, had the outside running throughout. Appreciate (P. G. PtanOck), the Seadown Handicap top-weight, ran in from the six . furlongs in Imto 19 2-Ssec, the last three in 40aec.
