ACTORS GIVEN NOTICE

Players’ Plight Emphasised

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 29.

The acting chairman of the New Zealand Players (Mr G. H. A. Swan) said today that the company was “on the verge of folding up” unless it. could get the help it needed. The present touring play would go off the road after its Saturday performance in Napier unless a miracle happened. The actors were under notice

Mr Swan said that after seven years in which the company had presented 28 plays to a total audience of nearly 1.250.000. it looked as if the lack of ready cash would finish everything. Mr Swan said the bugbear during the year was that the Players had always been in debt. The company got its start from gifts from Edith and Richard Campion which amounted to nearly £20,000. Further money was raised by means of floating

debentures, donations and grants from art union, funds. “In the light of the company’s turnover of £BO.OOO annually, the indebtedness, whilfe substantial, is not, it is felt, unmanageable, with reasonable help." he said.
