27,000-Strong Engineers’ Union To Leave F.O.L

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 24.

Delegates to this week’s annual conference of the New Zealand Engineering Workers’ and Related Trades’ Union decided in a secret ballot and by a large majority to disaffiliate from the Federation of Labour.

Before the ballot the president of the Federation of Labour (Mr F. P. Walsh) and the secretary (Mr K. McL. Baxter) addressed the 40 delegates representing the 27,000 members in the 24 branches of the union.

Mr J. A. Neale, the union’s national secretary, said today that Mr Walsh was given a courteous and attentive hearing on the recent freezing industry dispute, but there was no applause, either before or after his speech.

The conference, after being addressed by the Prime Minister (Mr Nash), pledged full support for the return of the Labour Government, said Mr Neale.
