AN APPRECIATION

[By

E.J.D.]

For 10 years I have had the good fortune to work with a modest and intelligent man, the late Mr C. S. Lovell-Smith. He was an artist of keen perception and a very sensitive person: although he held strong personal views about his chosen field of art, his breadth of view allowed him to concede to others their own preferences.

He was a man of great integrity and knowledge. Gentle in manner but quietly firm, the affairs of the School of Art ran smoothly under his guidance. Because of his kindly personality the life and work of the staff has been congenial and rewarding and staff and student have benefited by working together in harmony under his influence. His work as director of the school undoubtedly curtailed his creative output and this was a personal sacrifice as well as a public loss.

He took a keen interest in ths. welfare of his students, who in their turn valued and trusted him. A fair and upright man, his loss is keenly felt by all who knew him.
