New Tupping Harness

A new type of tupping harness was shown to farmers at the field day held at the Ruakura Animal Research station last week as part of the Ruakura farmers week. Developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia it will be available to farmers next season through stock and station agents. The attachment comprises a belly strap and two shoulder straps and a block of raddle held in place by a pin. The harness costs about £2 and the raddle pads about 8s 6d each. The raddle, which can be changed without removing the harness, is said to be effective in both wet and dry weather. The raddle is available in three degrees of hardness. The demonstrator said it was not suggested that the harness should be used with every ram but rather with a few rams to pick out late lambers and empty ewes. Another refinement would, however, be to use it to identify early lambers. Where it was being used late in the tupping period only it was probable that only one raddle block would be needed.
