Litten, who was to drive Caduceus half an hour later, and Hayes, the downcast drivertrainer of the ailing Australian horse, Fettle, sent the champagne to the big sports-writing contingent “as a gesture of thanks to the press boys” for the way,the Australian-New Zealand camp had been received in the United States.
