Top Bowler Transferred
QNE of Christchurch’s outstanding bowlers, E. C. Budd, has been transferred to London. The Elmwood Club, and bowlers generally, will be sorry to see him go.
Budd was a member of the Haitaitai club in Wellington before coming to Christchurch, but he made a start in bowls at Rotorua, where he was coached by his father, Mr A F. Budd—who as recently as 1958 skipped a Takapuna four to success in the Auckland Christmas Fours. Succcesses In his first session at Elmwood. Budd won the club’s three titles, and then went on to take the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s champion of champion singles and pairs. He had S. Muff as his lead in the pairs. Last season he won his club’s pairs, fours and graded fours and was runner-up in the singles. He was beaten in the semi-finals of the champion of champions pairs and fours but won the centre’s open singles.
Budd took to bowls seriously after World War n and, in a short time, has proved himself to be an outstanding player. He has won 17 elub and nine centre (itles. His greatest successes have been in singles, where, in 13 stepsons, he has won 10 club titles. At Rotorua he won his club’s , singles four years in succession and the champion of champions twice in succession. As a member of the Kensington club, Wharigarei, he took the singles twice in three attempts. At Haitaitai he won the singles three times out of four... He was nominated by the Wellington Centre for selection for the Empire Games team to Cardiff but failed to win a place.
■ Budd is a delightful player to watch, with an easy style, and he has the right approach to the game. He is never ruffled, but keeps up with his steady drawing, which has brought him so many successes.
