Combined Yacht Races
rpHE decision of the three yachtA ing clubs on the Estuary— Christchurch, Mt Pleasant and pleasant Point—to hold combined class races on several occasions next season will be widely welcomed. With competitors from any club eligible to compete, these open class races should do much to bring back a strong spirit of competition which has been lacking in recent years. One of the problems encountered in yachting in Canterbury has been the number of clubs sponsoring different classes and holding many small club events. While these are important in providing competition for many of their club members, the much more valuable inter-club and in-tfer-class competition has been lost sight of.
If the venture of the three Estuary clubs proves successful, then both competitors and the public of Christchurch are going to find much more interest in yachting.- The sight of a fleet of 50 or more boats racing on the Estuary will not only be an outward sign of numerical strength but also a significant indication that Canterbury yachtsmen are aware of the leeway they have to make up on other provinces and are organising the type of races which are best means of providing top competition.
