Decisive Win For Christchurch

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, June 24.

Superior pace and combination in the backs gave the Christchurch Boys High Schoo) first fifteen a decisive 23-6 win against Timaru Boys' High School in an inter-school Rugby match at Fraser Park, Timaru, today. Leading by 14 points to 0 after 29 minutes of play. Christchurch held the whip hand in spite of some spirited loose forward rushes by Timaru In the second half. The Christchurch backline handled immaculately, and several attractive movements had the defence sorely tried

M. Ryan, at half-back for Christchurch. and D. Johnson, at first fiveeighths. combined well, and gave the outside backs room to use their pace. The centre three-quarters, M P. Gregg, sliced through the defence in several thrusting runs which paved the way for tries by Christchurch. 1

On the right wing, R. Grenfell scored a good try after a 30-yard run. and the other Christchurch winger. L. A. Bates, was also fast and elusive. Christchurch’s first try in the second half resulted from a well-placed centring kick by Bates.

P. M. Pearce, at full-back, was not often under pressure, but his splendid tackling stopped two possible tries by Timaru. Timaru backs were handicapped by injuries to the five-eighths. The team’s two most impressive backs were the wing three-quarters, G. J. Pateman and W. N. Park. Pateman scored a determined try after a 40-yard run.

The Christchurch pack, led by the lock and captain, M. J. Millar, had an advantage in height and weight. Millar was a dominant figure in the line-outs, and in the tight pla.v had strong support from C. R. Burns, and the two props. I. Teller and M. Sharman.

The Tima'ru forwards were led well in the loose by the two fastmoving flankers. A. P. Anderson and J. G. Rowan.
