DIESELS POPULAR

AN improved version of a British diesel engine used in taxis in several cities in the United States is being shown at the British Exhibition in New York this month. The engine (the Perkins P 4-203) is higher powered with a slightly larger bore, and develops 62 brake horse power at 3000 r.p.m. Less than a year ago, the Wall Street Journal” reported that the Checker Cab Company Association had found, after running a Ply-mouth-Perkins taxi for four

months, that the diesel cab averaged 19.2 miles a gallon of fuel compared with 10.4 miles a gallon with the petrol model. The diesel is causing a minor revolution in the taxi business in other countries as well. About 400 taxis in Brussels have been converted, and most of these are large American models. In Malaya, taxi drivers are switching to diesels at the rate of 100 a month. More and more diesels are also appearing on New' Zealand taxi stands.
