NEW CHURCH HAS DOUBLE PURPOSE

St. Luke’s To Serve As Church And Hall The new St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Pine avenue, South Brighton, will serve the parish as a hall as well as a church. A curtain will screen the sanctuary when the building is not being used for services. The new building has seating for 150 persons. The Rev. Canon R. J. Witty said yesterday that the old church, a converted house, was proving too small for the needs of the district. It is planned to use the old church as' parish rooms. Built of concrete, the new church cost £6500. A large concrete cross set into the east outside wall is one of the dominating features. Another steel cross on the top of the gable has a rising sun symbolising the resurrection. The concrete has been painted on the outside in yellow. The roof, of corrugated iron, is grey, and the facings are green. The floor of red pine and the sanctuary ceiling of oregon have been left in their natural colour and polished. Canon Witty said that the ceiling of the sanctuary was an excellent piece of craftsmanship. The inside walls are finished in white.

Thei money for the new churcb came mostly from a loan from the Diocese of Christchurch, Canon Witty said. - si The church will be dedicated on July 10 by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren). It is the third church in the parish. St. Faith’a is the parish church and St. Andrew’s the church in North Brighton. The parish serves Ixoo to 1400 families.
