Man’s Fines And Expenses Make “Staggering Total”

(New Zealand P/ess Association)

ASHBURTON, June 20.

“The staggering total" of £3OO in fines and expenses had been imposed on Edward George Dore, aged 23, bulldozer driver, of Christchurch, for his part in a “high spirited” journey from Timaru to Christchurch on the evening of March 13 last, Mr M. Loughnan told Mr N. M. Izard, S.M., in the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Dore faced three charges resulting from the journey.

Dore had been involved with four other defendants in charges in the Timaru and Christchurch Magistrate’s Courts, Mr Loughnan said. He asked the Magistrate to dismiss the charges in view of the penalty already imposed on Dote. The three charges were:— Assault on Richard Selwyn Law; P assault on Shelagh Winifred Chapman, and behaving in a disorderly manner in East street. Saying that Dore had been “fairly strongly handled already,” the Magistrate dismissed the charges. a

No evidence was offered by the

police prosecutor, Senior-Sergeant J. Devlin.

Outlining the expenses Dore had already been caused, Mr Loughnan said that Timaru Court charges totalled £45, with expenses making an extra £lO Dore had been sentenced to a month in prison, and his driving licence had been cancelled for two years. An appeal to the Supreme Court had involved further expense amounting to a staggering total of £3OO, Mr Loughnan said. Other fines had been imposed by a Christchurch Court “Dore had already paid the price more than heavily,” said counsel. In the circumstances he would ask the police to withdraw the charges. Dismissing the charges, the Magistrate said that Dore had already paid the penalty for the journey; In those circumstances it would be proper for him to dismiss the three charges. If the hearing had been continued, the probable penalty would have been for defendant to come up fowentence if called on, he added.
