ANNUAL ARMY EXERCISE

Junior Officers To Be At First Phase The first phase of the Army’s annual exercise is due to start at Burnham Military Camp this morning. It will be attended by junior officers of the Regular Force. They have come to Burnham from all parts of New Zealand. The exercises will be directed ( by the Chief of the General Staff (Major-General Sir Stephen Weir). This year’s exercise will be a study of conventional operations! in support of a civil government of South-east Asia against insurgency; and of a new order of battle. Officers will be given a series of problems based on the study topics. The exercise, which will all be indoors except for the demonstration of company formation and equipment by the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, is a tactical exercise without troops. The first phase of the exercise will conclude on Thursday. The second phase—for senior officers—will be at Burnham from July 1 to 3.
