SHIPPING FEES AT PANAMA

Suggested Increase Investigated

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, June 20. The Department of External Affairs is checking the demand of the Panamanian Consul, Mr Humberto Zappi, that all shipping companies and exporters must pay increased charges for ships visiting Panama. The department has obtained a list of fees from the authorities in Panama and is translating it for checking against the fees Mr Zanpi has stipulated. He stated that every ship visiting Panama will need a certificate from him clearing the passenger list, the crew list and the foodstore list. Each certificate will cost 355.

In addition the shipping companies must pay 7s for a certificate for each passenger going ashore. Another list of the Panamanian fees, received in Auckland, indicates that the fees are paid in Panama, at the port of- destinauaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaai

tion, rather than to a representative at the port where the trip begins, but when this was referred to Mr Zappi he said that was not the case with all the fees. The Panamanian Government has always had a nominal fee for entering the republic, but has not tried to enforce it in the past.
