“SPLENDID HELP” GIVEN C.O.R.S.O.

Record Collections Made Last Year

“Splendid help and co-opera-

tion” given to C.OJLS.O. last year by increasing numbers of people in Christchurch and its surrounding country district had resulted in all records being broken for money contributed and clothing and footwear sent overseas, the annual meeting of the Christchurch district C.O.RJS.O. committee was told last evening. World events “pin-pointing” the unhappy lot of millions of men, women, and children, and the publicity of the United Nations’ World Refugee Year, had brought home to New Zealand people the urgency of C.0.R.5.0. work, said Mr E. C. Munt, the committee’s chairman.

During the annual clothing drive held last September, 165.929 good used garments were packed for shipment overseas, and 12,207 pairs of shoes and other footwear—an increase of 35.651 articles of clothing and 4282 of footwear over the 1958 total. Mr Munt said.

The annual cash appeal in Christchurch had seemed to capture popular imagination, with the result that £14,518 had been collected—£2s2s more than in 1958. said Mr Munt

Besides clothing and footwear, the C.0.R.5.0. depot—now at 94 Gloucester street—had packed and shipped milk powder, honey, soft toys, and hospital supplies valued at £1250.

Mr Munt expressed thanks to the large number of persons and organisations who had helped or supported C.0.R.5.0.’s work.
