The 30ft pole is a gift from the Centennial Commission of Oregon to the City of Christchurch in recognition of hospitality shown to Oregon men who have passed through Christchurch on their way to the Antarctic. It is proposed to erect the pole in Little Hagley Park, near the Carlton Mill bridge. In the front row of those watching the unloading are, from left, the airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson), the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast), the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), and Colonel D. R. Bridges, U.S.A.F.
