STUDENTS IN KOREA

Eisenhower’s

Appeal

(Rec. 10 p.m.) SEOUL, June 20.

President Eisenhower today urged the young Korean students who toppled Dr. Syngman Rhee’s Government in April to keep faith with democracy. He warned Americans working in Korea that global war or complete chaos might be the alternatives to “decent and rising living standards throughout the world.” Mr Eisenhower sent his message to Korean students everywhere through a student leader who marched tn the demonstrations that precipitated the fall of the Rhee Government. The student. 21-year-old LeeTae-sup, was one of 12 Koreans who had breakfast with Mr Eisenhower.

The White House press secretary. Mr James Hagerty, told reporters Mr Eisenhower closely questioned the student about the belief of Korean youth in democracy. This was significant against the background of Japanese Left-wing student riots which forced the cancellation of Mr Eisenhower’s visit to Tokyo.
