Floods Recede In Most Places

(Neu> Zeaiana Press Assocuitioni DUNEDIN, June 20. Heavy week-end rain caused widespread flooding in sputh and west Otago last night and this morning, but by tonight water in most areas was receding. Many roads were impassable during the height of the flooding, but tonight the only major roads affected are the Balclutha-Owaka highway, the Owaka-Invercargill highway, and the'McNab-Willow-bank-Tapanui highway. Ballast from the Milton-Rox-burgh railway line was washed out when the Waitahuna river broke its banks. The damage was not severe, bitt today’s train was cancelled and the work of replacing the ballast begun. The Tokomairiro river crossed the Main South road at several points near Milton, but by tonight it had dropped considerably. Large areas of country along the course of the river and many of the low-lying roads were also affected. Local residents said the water over the main road was, at the height of the flooding, only 2in below the highest ever experienced. •
