Henry VIII And The Church Of England
Sir, —The flood of erudition let loose by my original letter has overwhelmed me. Actually my only purpose in bringing up the subject was the recommendation by the New South Wales Synod that history books should be revised to dispose of the accepted belief that “Henry VlH’s roving eye” was primarily responsible for the establishment of the Church of England. Naturally, as. your successive correspondents have pointed out, the cause went a good deal deeper, but for a schoolboy the two facts about Henry VIII which make a real impact on his mind are (1) that he had six wives, and (2) that his defiance of the Pope set off a train of events which ultimately resulted in the Church being reformed to suit his personal interests. This may be an oversimplified deduction, but it seems to have withstood the test of time.—Yours, etc.. CARACTUS. June 18, 1960. [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed., “The Press”].
