COTTON TEXTILES MARKET
Visit Of Japanese Representatives
Three representatives of the Japanese Cotton Textiles Export Federation arrived in Christchurch on Saturday to talk with manufacturers and wholesale and retail merchants in the city as part of the group’s tour of New Zealand to investigate the. market for Japanese cotton piece goods in New Zealand. They are Messrs S. Kawai, of Tokyo (leader of the party), Y. Fujimura, and T. Watanabe, of Osaka, accompanied by Mr S. Kinoshita, of Osaka.
. Members of the group, who spent several days in Auckland and Wellington before coming to Christchurch, said yesterday they were seeking information on the reputation of Japanese cotton textiles in New Zealand. Customers visited so far had, generally speaking, expressed satisfaction with the goods supplied, they said, and business in New Zealand was increasing gradually all the time. Shirts and blouses were the main items they had seen made up by New Zealand (manufacturers from Japanese piece goods.
Asked if Japanese palates were developing a greater taste for mutton and lamb after New Zealand’s efforts to market meat in Japan, members of the, group said they believed a popular Japanese sausage meat contained New Zealand mutton. After discussing among themselves the merits of mutton and beef the members of the group intimated that beef was in general more popular than mutton.'
The party will return to Auckland by air this week, then travel to Australia to explore markets there and return to Japan by way of Hong Kong.
