CREWS’ REFUSAL TO SAIL

Disputes Referred To Labour Department

(New Zealand Pfess Association) WELLINGTON, June 19.

Disputes which held up the sailings of two ships—the Kauri and the Puriri—have been re- 1 ferred to the Labour Department and attempts are expected to start arbitration proceedings in each case next week.

Though the Secretary of Labour (Mr H. L. Bockett) refused to comment on the disputes today, it is reliably understood that the matters will be handled by the department as early as possible next week.

The Union Steam Ship Company today confirmed that the Kauri was paid off in Wellington yesterday. The Anchor Shipping Company’s Puriri will pay off to-morrow.
