DRAMA AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
South Brighton C.W.I. Wins Area Contest
The South Brighton Country Women’s Institute won the drama section of the area drama and music festival of the North Canterbury and Canterbury Federations of Country Women’s Institutes, held recently at Kaiapoi. Their play, “The Six Wives of Calais,” was produced by Daphne Millburn. This play won the Canterbury district festival. The Rangiora C.W.I. was second with “The Threshold,” produced by Doris Watson. The judge (Mr L. C. Barton) commented on the high standard of work.
In the music section, the North Canterbury Federation choir, conducted by Una Bush, was placed first. A combined choir from the Canterbury Federation, conducted by Nan Roberts, was placed second.
When giving his comment, the judge of this section (Mr W. Hawkey) congratulated both choirs on their high standard of singing and also on the valuable contribution they made to the community. An apology was received from the Director of Adult Education, University of Canterbury (Mr D. Rutherford),
The president of the North Canterbury Federation (Mrs T. E. Crossen) welcomed the guests and Introduced the Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr O. M Williams), who opened the festival.
Mrs C. D. Newton, president of the Canterbury Federation, thanked all who had contributed to a very successful festival.
