Golf WORLD AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS
N.Z. To Bid For Tournament
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 17. An application for the 1962 World Amateur Golf championships to be held at the Middlemore course. Auckland, is to be made by New Zealand's representative to the World Amateur Golf Council (Mr D. O. Whyte) when he attends a council meeting in Philadelphia in September. . ~ This was decided by the New Zealand Golf Council today. The chairman of the council (Mr G. P. Roberts) put forward the reasons for the selection of Middlemore. He said that at a Canada Cup tournament 1 at Melbourne, there were an estimated 17.000 persons on the course of whom only 10,000 had paid for admission. "There was a terrific loss, ne Sa Mr Roberts said that the world championships must be held on a course which could be policed. Middlemore was the only ° h f suitable standard in Auckland which could be effectively controlled. However. the council meeting empowered Mr Whyte to withdraw the application if need be.
