Badminton RAILWAY BEATS KNOX, 9-7
First Round Surprise '
The winner of the Canterbury Badminton Association's A grade competition last season, Knox, was beaten by Railway in a first round match In the 1960 competition played this week. Railway won by 9 games to 7. Although Knox has lost Its top two men and top two women from last season, the gain of two very strong women, and the greater experieno of > its men players should have enabled the team to win this match. The mixed doubles were played first and Railway won three of these, one very narrowly, and later won all the men’s matches and lost all the women’s to retain its slight advantage. Results were:—
Men’s Singles.—A. G. Duckmanton beat E. A. Harrington, 15-10; L. Mangos beat S. J, Lawn, 15-5; D. Forbes beat P. A. Small, 15-7; M. Ford beat W. Duggan, 15-5. Women’s Singles.—Mrs M. Miller lost to Miss S. Field, 4-11; Miss E. Chandler lost to Miss C. Swift, 2-11; Mrs G. Robinson lost to Mrs M. Jefferys, 1-11: Miss P. Thomson lost to Miss M. Benjamin, 8-11. Men’s Doubles.—Duckmanton and Mangos beat Harrington and Lawn, 15-5; Forbes and Ford beat Small and Duggan, 15-2. Women’s Doubles.—Mrs Miller and Miss Chandler lost to Misses Fielc and Swift, 9-15; Mrs Robinson and Miss Thompson lost to Mrs Jeffery and Miss Benjamin, 5-15. Mixed Doubles.—Duckmanton and Mrs Miller beat Harrington and Miss Field, 15-3; Mangos and Miss Thompson beat Lawn and Miss Swift, 15-11; Ford and Miss Chandler beat Small and Mrs Jeffreys, 18-17; Forbes and Mrs Robinson lost to Duggan and Miss Benjamin, 15-17. Railway won by 9 matches to 7.
