PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY
Production Increases Recorded
More production increases have been recorded by the pulp and paper industry for the year ended March 31, 1960, mainly in paper other than newsprint and paperboard, while newsprint production was similar to that of the previous year, according to the Government Statistician. The annual exports of products from this industry now total just over £6m. The main rises in production for 1959-60 compared with 1958-59 were:—paper other than newsprint 5300 tons; paperboard 4000 tons; and fibrebord 1800 tons. Total production of wood pulp for 1959-60 totalled 247,000 tons against 235.000 tons in the previous year. New Zealand consumption in 1959-60 was 189,000 tons (175.000 tons in 1958-59)—a1l the mechanical pulp and approximately 60 per cent, of the chemical pulp.
