SAWN TIMBER PRODUCTION
Second Successive Record Set (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 17. Sawn timber production for the year ended March 31 was a record for the second year in succession, having reached 700 million board feet, said the Minister of Forests (Sir Eruera Tirikatene). Production totals for all major species were higher than for last year except for beech. There were increases in radiata pine (31 million board feet), Douglas fir (six million), rimu (12 million), and tawa (five million). Exotic timber production had surpassed that of Indigenous timber. The output of exotic species, which was 10 million board feet in 1930, rose to 48 million by 1940, 155 million by 1950, and had now reached the record figure of 355 million board feet, said the Minister. Indigenous production for the same period was 272 million in 1930. 288 million in 1940, 324 million in 1950 and 339 million this year, he added.
