RED CROSS APPEAL
£1656 Collected In Streets With 78 collection boxes still to be returned from suburban areas, £1675 is the collection figure for the street appeal held by the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society yesterday. Last year about £3900 was collected and the final figure this year will be almost £4OOO. Between 450 and 500 collectors were on the streets in the city and suburbs for most of the day. There was a stall in Cathedral square and a market in the hall at the Durham Street Methodist church. The market and stall were kept very busy selling the farm produce, meat and eggs contributed by the country subcentres of the society and £990 was raised between them. The money raised will not be used especially for the Chile relief fund. Other urgent needs in the society’s work will benefit Some special contributions were made yesterday for the fund.
