“Two Sightings In Two Years”

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 17.

The Government haa been advised of only two “possible” submarine sightings in the last two years, the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) said tonight. “In both cases they were many miles outside our territorial waters,” he said.

Mr Connolly said he discussed Rear-Admiral Phipps's reported statement with him by telephone tonight.

The Soviet Charge d’Affaires (Mr N. I. Evdokeyev) said tonight: “The Soviet Legation in Wellington has no knowledge of Soviet submarines near New Zealand.”
