LAY IN PATH OF CAR
Youth Fined At Auckland (New Zealand Press Association) . AUCKLAND, June 17. Eric Clyde Clewett, aged 18, butcher, who lay in the path of an oncoming car, forcing it to take evasive action, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland today to a charge of disorderly behaviour. Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., fined him £lO. Peter Laurence Larsen, aged 18, also charged with disorderly behaviour, did not appear and his case was adjourned. Mr A. W. Jeffries, police prosecutor, said that a man driving along Apirana aven.ue, Glen Innes, on April 24, saw a car m front swerve. He then saw a figure lying on the roadway. He moved out on the road to miss it and when about 20 feet away, another figure leap out and lay down in line with the other. He was right in the path of the car. “The driver braked and swerved violently. He estimates he missed the head of the second man by about a foot,” said Mr Jeffries.
The Magistrate said he regretted the absence of detention centres in New Zealand. As it was. all he could do was to fine Clewett.
