CUBAN ENVOY RESIGNS
Asylum Sought In Canada
(Rec. 8 p.m.) OTTAWA. June 16
Mr H. E. Luis A. Baralt Mederos announced today that he has submitted his resignation as Cuban Ambassador to Canada and will seek political asylum in Canada.
He said in a statement that his action was taken because “I find that as head of the mission, though a career diplomat as well, I can no longer defend, either effectively or with a clear conscience, those major items of policy with which I totally disagree.”
In Havana, the Cuban Government today accused two United States Embassy officials of “corspiring with a group of counterrevolutiionists” and ordered their immediate expulsion from Cuba. A Cuban Government announcement said Edwin L. Sweet, of Abilene. Texas, and William G. Friedemann, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, both assistant legal attaches, were surprised late last night at a meeting with a group of Cubans. The semi-official newspaper “Revolucion" said both Americans tried to escape but were caught by military investigation agents and held until the Foreign Minister ordered their release.
