CHRISTCHURCH TV STATION
Siting Of Trial Transmitter
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 16. The Broadcasting Service hoped to instal the experimental television transmitter for Christchurch on the Gloucester street site, but there had been no firm intention to establish the permanent TV station there, said the Minister in charge of Broadcasting (Mr Boord) tonight. Last evening the Christchurch, City Council refused to allow a temporary building to be erected on the site.
Mr Boord said that the experimental equipment was on order, and that the five-kilowatt station was expected to be delivered in a few months. The intention had been to site this station in Gloucester street so that existing radio aerials could be used for transmission. This was the procedure which had been followed in Auckland, the aim being to get the experimental station established as quickly as possible, using existing equipment where this could be done.
“The whole question of the building previously planned for the Gloucester street site is being reassessed in the light of developments, which include the advent of television into New Zealand, since the plans of the intended building were drawn,” said Mr Boord. “That- will be a permanent building.”
“We are still hoping to site the experimental TV station at 3YA. but are certainly not in a position yet to plan a permanent building there.”
