Two Winners In Melltourne

While the Australian stayers were winning the major prizes in Brisbane at the week-end. New Zealand-bred gallopers did well in Melbourne. Two-year-olds from the Dominion finished first, second and third in the Rothsay Handicap. Unhindered (Fair’s Fair—Frustration) won the York Hurdles by 15 lengths, and Nether Gold and North ran second and third in the one mile and a half Sandringham Handicap First place in the Rothsay Handicap went to Blue Pelt, a son of the English-bred stallion, Blueskin IL and Cachette. by Beau Repaire. Blue Pelt is one of the first crop of Blueskin 11, a son of the Derby winner, Blue Peter, and the Hyperion mare. Freckle. Second place a length and a half behind Blue Pelt was filled by Opo, by Chatsworth II Waterlogged.' Opo was bought by an agent at the Wellington yearling sales last year for 200 guineas for Mr M. Marshall, who races him.

Blue Pelt brought 450 guineas at the same sale, and the third place-getter. Royal Commerce, brought 550 guineas. Royal Commerce is a gelding by Marco Polo ll—Royal Battle. Unhindered was the easiest winner of the day. in the York Hurdles on Saturday. Unhindered took the lead with a round to go and ran his rivals off their feet oxer the last mile. From three starts over hurdles he has now won twice and been placed second once. A five-year-old gelding by Fair’s Fair from Frustration. Unhindered was bought in New Zealand as a yearling by a wellknown Victoria owner, Mr S. Calvert, who passed him on to his present owners for 950 guineas. Nether Gold, which finished second, to Macdougal in the last Melbourne Cup. was beaten by a short half head by French Master in the Sandringham Handicap. Nether Gold, an aged gelding by Rolled Gold from Netherlee, is a full brother to the New Zealand Cup winner, Foglia d'Oro. He is raced by L. and J. Summers and the Estate of the late R Summers. North. which finished two lengths behind him on Saturday, is a three-year-old daughter of ‘he New Zealand mare. Hastings. She was bred in Australia, by the Australian sire. Carbon Copy. North is raced by Mr W. R. Kemball. owner of the Victorian champion. Lord.
