KELP FIT FOR OAMARU

Sound Trial At Riccarton

Kelp beat his stablemate Kastanea in a sound mile trial at Riccarton yesterday. They are rival candidates for the Oamaru Winter Cup, and Kelp, in his present form, should represent Riccarton creditably. They had their race riders up— B. W. McDonald on Kelp and N. £astwood on Kastanea. The weights favoured Kastanea. but Kelp won the trial by a length in Imin 45 l-ssec. Kelp ran the last half-mile in 52sec. Dice (N. Eastwood) was disappointing in his Anal trial for the Waikaura Champion Hack Handicap at Oamaru. He legged far behind Last Link (W. Hanlin) and the stablemates Kaseno (A. J. Stokes) and Balance (R B. Taggart) over a mile. Last Link beat the stablemates by three-quarters of a length and recorded Imin 47 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Dice took Imin 50 2-ssec for his mile. He started behind the others, reduced their lead half way through the gallop, but dropped well behind in the straight. The stablemates Carrageen (A. J. Stokes) and Zayton (P. Graham) ran their mile in Imin 50 3-ssec, quickening slightly for the last half-mile in 54 2-ssec. Carrageen has the speed 1i match the best of his rivals in the Awamoa Hack Handicap at Oamaru, but he has often lost ground at the start of his races. Luv and Ducks (L. McGuire) led Double Impress (P. Graham) by half a length, and then there was a length to County Kildare (M. Skelton) finishing half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Luv and Ducks was ridden in behind for the first three furlongs or so, and finished strongly. Kamel (R. B. Taggart) and Corduroy <A. H. Eastwood) sprinted from the half-mile in 51 l-ssec. Offend (M. Skelton) and Navarone (L. McGuire) followed in 53 2-ssec. Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) showed characteristic dash in running half a mile in 51sec. He may make a fresh start at Ashburton next week. The stablemates Baron Bold (P. Graham) and Four Kings (M. Skelton) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, the last four in 51 2-ssec. Tidal Wave (W. Beck) and Paua (K. Reggett) were abreast a length ahead of Master Main (A. J. Stokes) after running half a mile in 50 3-ssec. It was a smart gallop by these two-year-olds. McCool (C. McDonald) loped over half a mile in 51sec. He is a long strider and a deceptive mover.
