Richest Fight In History
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyngnt) NEW YORK, June 14.
The battle between Ingemar Johansson and Floyd Patterson for the world’s heavyweight title next Monday will be the richest prize-fight in history. Total receipts at the gate and for theatre television are expected to reach 3,500,000 dollars. A crowd of about 30,000 is already assured from advance bookings
The president of Teleprompter Corporation, Mr Irving Kahn, reports that sales for closed-cir-cuit TV tickets at 230 locations in 125 cities in the United States and Canada are “fabulous.” The combined 3,500,000 dollars from live gate and theatre-TV will exceed the previous record paid for a fight—2,658,660 dollars at the second Jack Dempsey-Gene Tunney title bout in Chicago on September 22, 1927. That record was entirely for a live gate. No combination of live gate and theatre-TV has yet exceeded it
