SPASTICS HOME PLANNED
Society “Confident” Of State Aid
The Adult Cerebal Palsy Society in Christchurch is confident that as a result of its willingness to help itself the Minister of Health (Mr Mason) will give sympathetic consideration to its proposed new home. This is contained in a supplied report on the society’s third annual meeting which took place on Wednesday. No firm arrangement had been made on a subsidy towards the cost of the new home when two members of the society interviewed Mr Mason a year ago, but the society believed that after it had made some effort itself Government help would be available at the appropriate time, the report said. The meeting was attended by members of Parliament, city councillors and representatives of several organisations including Rotary, Round Table, Lions, the National Council of Churches and the Junior Chamber.
Mr N. E. Kirk, MJ 1 ., who was elected president of the society on Wednesday evening, said that the society was formed in 1958 with the aim of providing a home for adult cerebal palsy cases. The patients who were admitted to Pukeora were younger ones who were likely to benefit from the treatment.
It was decided to send a statement of the aims and objects of the society to all interested organisations. A street appeal will be held on July 29. Officers elected were:—Patrons, Miss M. B. Howard, M.P., the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning); president, Mr E. N. Kirk, M.P.; vice-president, Mr P. J. Skellerup; secretary, Mrs J. Oakley; treasurer, Mrs E. Porteous; board of management, Messrs L. T. Loversidge, P. Dunbar, L. M. Keating, D. Barrett, Mesdames E. L. Sanderson, E. B. Dalmer, E. V. Gibson (outgoing president), R. Smith, Misses M. McLean, and L. N. Paton.
