PROTECTION BY TARIFF
Economist’s Proposal Discussed (From Out Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 16. Adoption of an economist’s recommendations on tariff protection was urged by several speakers at the industrial development conference today. Professor F W. Holmes had argued in a background paper for protection of industry by tariff, which should not however, be high enough to promote uneconomic expansion. Mr G. E. Stock (Associated Chambers of Commerce) and Mr A. H. Ward (Dairy Board) urged No 2 committee to adopt Professor Holmes’s conclusions in the committee’s report to the plenary session tomorrow. Mr A. R. Dellow (Manufacturers' Federation) agreed with Professor Holmes’s recommendations, but insisted that quantita--wcLe neede d in "trategic reasons as weU as reM °ns. Mr Dellow said.
