Britain Seeks Closer Ties
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) LONDON, June 16.
The British Government has begun a review of British-Chinese cultural relations in the hope of finding a new formula of friendship with Peking, said the "Daily Mail” today. “Immediate chances of an entente are slim, dogged as they are by America’s present refusal to recognise Red China,” said the newspaper.
But the British Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) was arguing privately that the estrangement between China and the United States could not last for ever. “The election of a new (American) President in November may not at once ease tension in the Far East, but one of the Western allies at least must try to mediate,” the newspaper said. Reliable sources in London have forecast for some time that feelers will be put out after the American election for an exchange of visits between the British and Chinese leaders.
