Sportsman’s Notebook KAKATAI AND TECHNICAL SHARE BASKETBALL LEAD
With two teams sharing the lead, the end of the first round of the senior basketball competition on Saturday should be most interesting. Kakatai and Technical share the lead with eight points, and are followed by Sacred Heart, with six. This week Sacred Heart will meet Technical in a crucial match. Sacred Heart was beaten by Kakatai last week, but the team was not in its usual form, with passes from the centre going astray Technical will be handicapped this week by the absence of Betty Rowe, for her defence is a strongpoint in the team. If the team plays as well as it did last week, Kakatai should have an easier game against Teachers’ College on Saturday, which is fourth in the competition. » SS « Roller Skating
An invitation to three United States champions to participate is included in the New Zealand Roller Skating Association’s plans for its twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations in 1962. The meeting of the association on Saturday decided to hold the anniversary celebrations in conjunction with the 1962 national championships in Christchurch. The Americans will be invited to take part in the championships, and also give exhibitions throughout New Zealand.
Forscutt Cup Canterbury sub-association bas ketball teams will meet in Christchurch this Saturday for the annual Forscutt Cup tournament. Representative teams from Hurunui, North Canterbury, Lincoln, Ellesmere and Banks Peninsula will take part. The Canterbury selectors (Mrs O. Shannahan, Miss B. Stone and Miss H. Yates) will select trialists from whom the Canterbury subassociation’s team for the New
Zealand tournament at the end of August will be chosen. sj: sit Maori Wrestler The Maori professional wrestler, Keith Meretana, is planning to wrestle overseas at the end of the present season. He has had offers from both Canada and Australia, and although he will probably favour Canada, has made no definite decision. Meretana said this week he had received an offer to wrestle in Sydney on four days this year, but the Dominion Wrestling Union had made him a “good offer” to stay here. * ¥ * Soccer Referees The classification of Canterbury’s senior soccer referees has resulted in Messrs R. Cullen and H. Royce being named as the province's two top referees. Next in order are Messrs C. Anderson and J. Sheffield. All the referees named are placed alphabetically and not necessarily in order of merit.
