CANTERBURY NAVY LEAGUE
“Valuable Support For Service”
The Navy League does particularly good work in supporting the sea cadets and entertaining the crews of visiting naval vessels, said the president (Mr P. D. Hall) at the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the league. “I would say that members of the navy in New Zealand are looked after better than members of any of the other armed services, mainly through the efforts of the Navy League,” said Mr Hall. He appealed to members to enrol friends in the league to increase and strengthen the status and importance of the body. Mr Hall spoke of the financial difficulties of the league in past years. “The increasing commitments and the diminishing value of the pound have not helped to improve the financial situation.” he said.
A proposal to raise the subscriptions to a flat rate of £1 a year for each member was passed. The meeting concluded with an address by Captain A. Turnbull, the naval liaison officer to the United Kingdom High Commissioner.
Captain Turnbull, who served in the Fleet Air Aim during World War 11, spoke on the development and history of the air arm from its beginnings with the historic Wright Brothers’ flight in 1903, to the efficient jet aircraft and modern aircraft carriers of the present day. Officers elected were:— President, Mr P. D. Hall; secretary, Mrs C. W. Collins; treasurer, Lieutenant-Commander A. R. Mackay; auditor, Mr J. Roy Smith; past president. Captain G. H. Dennistoun.
