Dilemma For Kishi (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MANCHESTER,-June 10. The Japanese Prime Minister (Mr Kishi) was taking a considerable risk in not suggesting a postponement of President Eisenhower’s forthcoming visit, said the “Guardian” today. The Japanese Government was caught in a “cleft stick.” “Although Mr Kishi says that President Eisenhower's visit on June 19 has nothing to do with

Japanese domestic affairs, he has staked his Government’s prestige on going through with the visit,” said the newspaper. ‘lf he cancels it now, he will lose face. Yet if he does not yield to the demonstrators, he will expose the President to a somewhat hazardous hospitality. “The visitor himself will not get much pleasure from travelling in a bullet-proof car between walls of policemen.”

The “Guardian” recalled that ■when President Eisenhower’s Russian trip was cancelled, it was replaced by a tour of American bases, a fact lamented by Japanese newspapers because it “looks like putting their country in line with Formosa, Okinawa and the Philippines.

“Above all, there were the unfortunate surprise tactics used by Mr Kishi for getting the new Security Treaty with the United States through his Parliament. “The obligations it imposes on Japan are no greater than those readily accepted by America’s European allies.’’ it said.
