CAPITAL GAINS TAX
National Opposed To Introduction (New Zealand Freer Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) said in his address at Papatoetoe tonight that his party was opposed to a capital gains tax Which it was believed the Labour Government was contemplating. He promised that taxes would be reduced, which was something Parliament had been unable to persuade the Minister of Finance, Mr Nordmeyer, to do. “When the Federation of Labour succeeded in doing this,” he said, “it made me wonder if we were living in a democracy.” Asked if the National Party would reduce the family benefit if it became the Government in November, Mr Holyoake said that it would not do so. But it had no intention of increasing it in the next three years.
