POST-MORTEM ON PIG
Nursed By Doctor During Voyage
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9.
A post-mortem on a valuable Landrace pig which died on the Brisbane Star while the ship was crossing through the Panama Canal, was carried out on the deck by a New Zealand doctor, returning home after a postgraduate course in London. He was helped by two stock attendants, Messrs F. M. Mulford and B. J. Osborne.
The animal was disposed of when the ship was well out to sea, said Mr Mulford today. The findings revealed that it had died of cancer of the bladder. The pig, which became ill shortly after the Brisbane Star left London on May 5, was carefully nursed by the doctor but he was unable to save it
The ship, which arrived in Wellington today, carried 25 Landrace pigs, one Aberdeen Angus heifer, two Galloway heifers, three Aberdeen Angus bulls and one Galloway bull. The bull was bought by Mr J. H Littlejohn, of Wanganui, and is said to be the highest-priced animal ever imported into New Zealand.
