J. W. ’R oods Wins Title
(Neu’ Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 9. J. W. Woods, a 34-year-old Wellington public servant, who plays bowls "just for something to do in the lunch hour,” won the New Zealand indoor bowls singles title, 23-9. at Lower Hutt. Aand though the event drew 1383 competitors, Woods's opponent in the final. J. Rodgers, was a fellow worker and clubmate.
Accuracy and temperament enabled Woods to build up a 9-0 lead after only three heads and his superiority became very apparent long before the game ended at the seventeenth head.
Woods met sterner opposition from R. Kerr (Waikato) in his aaml-final. winning 10-7: As hsd been the esse in earlier play, reputations were not respected in post-section games today and the defending champion, W. Wells, of Wellington, was eliminated early.
Resulta of s-.igles games were:— Quarter-finals: E. Morris (Upper Hutt), beat R. J. Williams (Hutt Valley), 10-5; R. Kerr (Waikato>. beat Mrs T. Hinton (Waikato). 9-9; J. W. Woods (Wellington), beat A Hoev (Hutt Valley). 10-6; J. Rodgers (Wellington), beat R. Loader (Waikato 1.14-8. Semi-finals: J. Rodgers beat E. Morris. 14-7; J. W. Woods beat R. Kerr, 10-7. t Final: J. W. Woods beat 3. Rodgers, 22-9.
