TELEVISION CONTROL
National Favours Commission
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. Asked at a public meeting at Papatoetoe tonight if the National Party favoured private enterprise operating commercial television in New Zealand, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) said he was not quite ready yet to give a full answer on this matter.
The National Party, he said, had not yet decided on its television policy completely. “But you can be sure,” he said, “that, as far as is practicable, we will lean toward having the drive of private enterprise operating commercial television.”
Mr Holyoake said that whether or not the medium was privately owned and controlled, the National Party felt it would be essential to have an over-all commission appointed by the Government.
This commission would determine who should have television broadcasting licences, and it would also supervise the type of programmes put over the stations.
