STOCK FOR SALE

About two' or three times a year an exceptionally big yarding of fat stock at Addington market causes some handling difficulties. This week for some unknown reason—possibly the sudden cold turn in the weather the previous day—between 8000 and 9000 fat lambs and fat' sheep poured into the market and in the middle of the morning there was a long queue of motor, lorries waiting outside the unloading bank at the yards with sheep and lambs long after the fat lamb sale had started.

Saleyards staff come on duty at 4.30 p.m. on the day before a sale to handle stock arriving during the night and up till 9 a.m. last Tuesday they had practically no stock to handle arriving by road. Then came the sudden influx of motor lorries and at the same time stock reached the yards from the West Coast by rail. Observers at the yards said that co-operation 'between farmers, transport operators and agents aimed at having more stock reach the yards during the night could have eliminated most of the difficulties experienced on Wednesday.
