MAY WAS MILD AND DRY
Rainfall Well Below Average
The weather in Christchurch last month was mild and dry, compared with May of 1959, according to the New Zealand Meteorological Service’s summary of weather recorded at the Christchurch International Airport and the Botanic Gardens.
No great extremes of temperatures were recorded, although air and ground temperatures were both above normal. South and south-west winds were recorded on only five days, compared with 25 days in May of last year. Rainfall for the month was 0.53 in at the airport and 0.47 in at the Botanic Gardens! The figures were well below the average rainfall for the month, which is more than two inches.
Rain fell at the airport on nine days and at the gardens on 10 days. The most rainfall in 24 hours was 0.19 in recorded at the gardens on May 11, and 0.15 in at the airport oh the same day. There were 122 hours of bright sunshine, compared with an average of 129 hours.
The highest maximum temperature was 715 degrees Fahrenheit at the airport on May 21, and 70 degrees at the gardens on the same day. ’ The lowest minimum temperature was 26.5 degrees Fahrenheit at the airport on May 28, and 28.3 degrees at the gardens on May 2§.
